Slogan Project 标娱计划

The slogan project is my undergraduate degree project in 2020.

In response to the slogans used in the Wuhan covid-19 epidemic, I created a series of posters, books, postcards, installations and contemporary artworks based on my field research. The main aim is to critique the paucity of contemporary slogan language and the tendency to entertain serious subjects.

Part 1: Book Design
Social propaganda to entertainment expression
- The derivation and transmutation of slogan culture in contemporary communal spaces

As a vehicle for grassroots governance, slogans served as an effective means of conveying ideologies and guiding behaviour during the Covid-19 epidemic. This book is designed as a study to illustrate the development and application of the slogan form in Chinese society from the perspectives of history, content and form.

Part 2: Poster / Postcard Design
A series of posters and postcards were created using the six different common forms of slogans derived from the research, such as pink A4 paper, flags, sticky notes and so on, combined with the content of the most common slogans. The slogans, which are frequently found in public spaces, are transformed into a personal and caring experience in private spaces.

Content: Stay safe and health at home, Everyone has responsibility, Wear a mask, Back to work, Don't eat wild animals, You've worked hard.

Part 3: Experimental Book Design / Installation: Slogan Entertainment
Inspired by Barbara Kruger and addressing the modern entertainment of serious politics, the entire book is divided into three projects: the Media Roam Project, the City Roam Project and the Internet Roam Project.

1. the Media Roam Project
In response to the phenomenon of slogans appearing everywhere in life, I installed them on a variety of different objects, allowing the meaning of the slogan and the object itself to collide.

2. the City Roam Project
Due to the strict lockdown in Wuhan, I was unable to leave the house for a maximum of 80 days. During this time, the most intuitive way for anyone else who wanted to get to know the city of Wuhan was to check out the VR cloudscape on Baidu Maps. I was amazed to find some of the slogans permanently present in the cloud archive.

3. the Internet Roam Project
In the online environment, however, slogans show more amusement, with a selection of funny slogans spreading through the online world, the entertaining become far more valued than their content expression.

Part 4: Art & Installation: Corona Puzzle
Sealed and framed slogans, like those put on the internet, from the moment the words are taken out of context, we stop thinking in terms of the message, and the information becomes an object of entertainment from that moment onwards. Sudoku, as a representation of intellectual entertainment, combined with the formal language of the banner promotes a reflection on the effectiveness of the language of propaganda, social space and public entertainment in contemporary social governance.
