Making Chaos

The communication of information, in the sense of content, relies on the comprehension of the recipient, which inevitably leads to ambiguity. The fuzziness of the presentation of road signs reduces the clarity of the content expression, and this inaccuracy weakens the authority of the instructions contained in the signs. In a relationship of authority, the receiver, having completed the physical discipline of social life in their early years and education, unconsciously aligns their free will with the direction of the sign, so they can easily understand and respond to ambiguous designs. As a type of public message, researchers have articulated perspectives on the expression of this message within the scope of linguistics, pragmatics and cognition, whereas I extend it to the field of graphic media to address the visual elements that influence the effectiveness of signage conveyances.

Signage contains multiple factors such as language, colour, material and placement, and each element contributes to the ambiguity of the signage that is ultimately displayed on the road. The object of my research for this final project is signage aimed at pedestrians. Unlike scientifically planned signage, pedestrian signs are usually temporarily installed on the roadside, they are lightweight, cheap, movable, reusable and anonymous, yet these features also make the message they convey appear less formal and authoritative.
